Mastopathy is a broad, not always clearly defined term for benign breast pain, tightness, lumps and cysts. Symptoms often vary with menstruation. A new firm lump, skin dimpling, bloody nipple discharge or a change in one breast needs investigation.
- Pain or tenderness in one or both breasts, often worse before menstruation.
- A breast that feels tight, heavy or burning.
- Wear a supportive bra that does not pinch anywhere; have the size checked again if needed.
- Record pain, lumps and menstrual days to see whether there is a cyclical pattern.
- Make an appointment for a new lump that remains after menstruation or feels clearly different from the surrounding tissue.
- For urgent GP care outside office hours, call HAP 9252. Call Ambulance 912 only for an immediate threat to life.
