In balanitis, the head of the penis is red, tender, itchy or swollen. The foreskin is often inflamed too. Irritation, fungus, bacteria, a skin disease, diabetes or a sexually transmitted infection may be the cause. Treatment depends on assessment.
- Redness, shininess or patches on the head of the penis and inside the foreskin.
- Itching, burning, tenderness or pain.
- Wash gently once a day with lukewarm water and do not use soap on the head of the penis or under the foreskin.
- Only pull the foreskin back if it moves easily, and always bring it forward again afterwards.
- Make an appointment for redness, pain, swelling, discharge or sores that do not improve after a few days of gentle care.
- For urgent GP care outside office hours, call HAP 9252. Call Ambulance 912 only for an immediate threat to life.
