Uveitis

Uveitis is inflammation inside the eye that can cause pain, redness, light sensitivity, floaters and reduced vision. Some forms cause few symptoms but still threaten sight. A newly painful red eye or a sudden increase in floaters with blurred vision needs same-day eye examination; never use corticosteroid eye drops on your own initiative.

  • Deep eye pain, redness particularly around the coloured part of the eye and marked sensitivity to light.
  • Blurred vision, reduced contrast or colour perception, distorted central vision or a veil over the eye.
  • Use each eye drop at the correct time, wash your hands and briefly press the tear duct beside the nose closed after instilling drops.
  • Shake a suspension if the leaflet instructs you to, and leave a few minutes between different drops.
  • Have a newly painful, red, light-sensitive eye assessed by a doctor or ophthalmologist the same day.
  • For urgent GP care outside normal opening hours, call HAP 9252. Call Ambulance 912 only for an immediately life-threatening situation.
  • Sudden severe vision loss, a dark curtain, loss of neurological function or unbearable eye pain with vomiting may indicate another acute eye or brain condition.
