Men may have difficulty starting, a weak stream, dribbling afterwards, a frequent urge to pass urine or passing urine at night. An enlarged prostate is a common cause, but infection, medicines, bladder problems and prostate cancer should be considered depending on the pattern.
- Difficulty starting, needing to strain or waiting a long time before urine comes.
- A weak, interrupted or spraying stream and taking longer to finish passing urine.
- Spread drinks throughout the day and limit large amounts shortly before bed or a long journey.
- Try to pass urine calmly without straining hard, and wait briefly to pass urine a second time if necessary.
- Make an appointment for new urinary symptoms, passing urine at night that disrupts sleep or increasing difficulty emptying the bladder.
- For urgent GP care outside normal opening hours, call HAP 9252. Call Ambulance 912 only for an immediately life-threatening situation.
