Scheuermann’s disease is a growth disorder in which several vertebrae become wedge-shaped, causing a stiff, rounded upper or middle back, usually during puberty. Exercise therapy, monitoring and sometimes a brace help; new weakness, numbness or problems with urination or bowel movements require immediate assessment.
- A rounded or angular upper or middle back that becomes more obvious on bending forwards and does not disappear completely on straightening.
- Dull back pain and tiredness after prolonged sitting, standing, lifting or sport, often around the apex of the curve.
- Keep moving with manageable activities and combine fitness work with the physiotherapist's specific exercises.
- Alternate sitting, standing and walking, and arrange your screen, chair and work surface to reduce the need to lean forwards for long periods.
- Make an appointment for a stiff, rounded back that increases during growth, does not straighten, causes pain or affects function.
