In preterm prelabour rupture of membranes, amniotic fluid leaks before 37 weeks and before labour begins. This always needs immediate assessment by the midwife or hospital because of infection, premature birth and umbilical cord problems; do not use a tampon or wait at home for contractions.
- A sudden gush of clear or pale pink fluid from the vagina.
- Continuous small amounts of watery fluid and repeatedly wet underwear.
- Call the midwife or hospital immediately and report how many weeks pregnant you are, the colour and smell, and when the fluid leakage began.
- Use a clean sanitary pad, not a tampon, and if possible keep information about the colour and amount.
- For any suspected amniotic fluid leakage before 37 weeks, call the midwife or hospital immediately.
- For urgent GP care outside normal opening hours, call HAP 9252. Call Ambulance 912 only for an immediately life-threatening situation.
