Pain on the outside of the hip is often caused by irritation of the gluteal tendons around the bony prominence at the hip. Adjusting activities and targeted exercise therapy usually help more than prolonged rest.
- Pain and tenderness directly over the outside of the hip.
- Pain when lying on that side, sometimes also when lying on the other side without a pillow between your knees.
- Sleep on the other side with a thick pillow between your knees, or on your back.
- Temporarily avoid crossing your legs and standing with your weight resting on one hip for a long time.
- Make an appointment if pain does not clearly decrease after six weeks of adjusted activity and exercises.
- For urgent GP care outside office hours, call HAP 9252. Call Ambulance 912 only for an immediate threat to life.
