In a middle ear infection, inflammatory fluid is present behind the eardrum. Children in particular develop sudden ear pain and fever after a cold. Most infections recover on their own, but young babies, seriously ill children and complications need prompt assessment.
- Sudden ear pain; young children may cry and touch the ear.
- Fever, irritability, poor sleep or drinking less.
- Give pain relief according to weight, the leaflet and advice from a doctor or pharmacist.
- Offer small amounts to drink frequently and watch for wet nappies or passing urine.
- Get in touch for ear pain with fever, especially in a young child or if drinking and sleep are poor.
- For urgent GP care outside office hours, call HAP 9252. Call Ambulance 912 only for an immediate threat to life.
