- Lichen planus is an inflammatory condition of the skin or mucous membranes.
- It can affect the skin, mouth, genitals, scalp and nails.
- It is not infectious and is not caused by something you have done wrong.
- Some forms resolve by themselves, but others may persist or return.
- Mouth, genital, scalp or nail symptoms need extra follow-up.
- A doctor also needs to consider medicine reactions or other causes that look similar.
Lichen planus can involve much more than itchy skin patches. The mouth, genitals, scalp and nails often need a different approach.
