Inflammation of the inner lining of the heart is usually a serious infection of a heart valve. Prompt hospital treatment with targeted antibiotics and sometimes surgery is needed to prevent heart failure, stroke and spread of the infection.
- Persistent or recurring fever, chills and night sweats are common.
- Unexplained tiredness, reduced appetite and weight loss may be the first symptoms for weeks.
- Do not try to treat endocarditis at home or use leftover antibiotics, as this can interfere with blood cultures and delay the right treatment.
- Take all prescribed medicines exactly on schedule and report side effects to the treatment team immediately.
- Get in touch the same day for persistent fever, chills or unexplained illness if you have an artificial valve, previous endocarditis or a significant congenital heart defect.
- For urgent GP care outside office hours, call HAP 9252. Call Ambulance 912 only for an immediate threat to life.
