- Atopic eczema, or atopic dermatitis, is recurring itchy skin inflammation caused by a combination of inherited tendency, skin barrier function and immune responses.
- It is not contagious and is not caused by poor hygiene.
- The condition often starts early in life but can develop or return at any age.
- Hay fever, asthma and certain allergies are more common in the same families, but not everyone has them.

- A personal application plan should specify which product to use where, how much, for how long and what to do if symptoms return.
- Infections, sleep loss and psychological and social effects should be actively recognised and treated.
